Worked as a garage owner in Pittsburgh, and was also based in Detroit during his racing career. However his biggest legacy to the sport was his involvement with the Lucenti Special, with Angelo Lucenti and John Saunders, which was a US home grown Indy contender to comply with the junk formula era of US racing. Unfortunately the car didn't qualify in 1932. Not to be outdone, Painter bought the car and now known as the Frigenor Special, attempted to qualify in 1935, but that too failed for both him and Herschel McKee. The car itself still survives and is being raced in historic events.
