Son of Satoru, who worked his way through the ranks, deliberately choosing to race with Toyota cars or Toyota backed series so to distinguish his career in his own right, rather than be accused of using his dad's name (a Honda linked man) to advance his career. He made his Formula 1 debut in late 2007. Stayed on until 2009, but lost his seat for 2010 after a poor year. Went back to Japan, racing in Super Formula and Super GT again and was still part of Toyota's World Endurance Championship challenge for years, winning for them at Le Mans in 2018 and 2019, plus also taking the World Endurance Championship that year. He won his third Le Mans in 2020. In 2021, he announced his retirement from racing to take control of the family racing team and to take more of the work away from his aging father.
