Full name was Allen. Part of the Miller racing dynasty, which included brother Bruce, who was killed in a crash in 1928. Miller later operated his own petrol station in Standish. A successful motorcyclist, Miller lost a leg in a crash, yet this didn't deter him and he tried four wheels instead! 1934 was the most successful of his thirteen Indianapolis 500's, finishing a strong sixth. A very popular, fan embracing man, Al enjoyed practical jokes and one of his favourite jokes was his false leg. Once when he had an accident, his false leg got stuck in the cockpit, so he got out of the car, unpinning his false leg and shocking the crowd, who weren't always aware of the affliction, who thought he had just lost his leg in the crash! Al also worked as a mechanic for some years.
