Midget star. After his retirement in the 1970's, he ran a dirt oval in Granite City, Illinois. His sons have taken over the running of the track since his passing. Wente became a fan of the sport at a very early age. He ended up having a thirty-seven year racing career, with the highlight being winning the USAC National Midget Driving Championship in 1963. He won almost 80 times in midget cars. His son, Terry, runs Wente's Open Wheel restaurant, which has Bob's racing memorabilia all over the establishment. Although Bob's main aim was to race at the Indianapolis 500, he always enjoyed racing midgets far more than competing at the '500.
