Right up until the day of his sudden death, Bobby was the distributor and dealer of his own tyre dealership, Bobby Johns Enterprises, in his native Miami. Bobby's dad, Shorty, raced in midget and roadsters, and Bobby followed him into the sport. However Johns served in the Army, but it was whilst he was stationed in South Carolina, that he starting racing in NASCAR events. It was also in the Army that he became a mechanical instructor and engineer, and this formed the groundwork for him to later start his own business. Bobby remained active and was a regular attendee for reunions at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
