A taxi driver in Indianapolis by profession, his wife, Jean (Eugenia, who he married one year prior), entered his car, and they put their family savings in the risk that Paul would do well and make some money from racing. However, despite some success in dirt cars, his Indianapolis 500 attempt was unsuccessful and the gamble, sadly, didn't pay off. Paul also worked as a bus driver - his father ran a bus company - and then at Firestone as a racing crew member, working with Waldo Stein. He was also a promoter of a speedway in Colton, California for a while.
