Killed in a Tasman race just before starting a Formula 1 season with Cooper. An intelligent chap (he held a bachelor degree in English Literature from Yale), he did very well in US racing, especially sportscars, despite having to serve in the US Army. A varied racer, he was rated to do extremely well. Both Tim and his brother Teddy - who managed Tim before moving into a similar role with McLaren - were the nephews of a former Governor of Pennsylvania, William Scranton, who was also the US Ambassador to the UN in 1976 and 1977. Mayer won the 1962 SCCA Formula Junior championship and impressed in sportscars, touring cars and single-seaters before tragically losing his life.
