Started his career with Renault in 1972 and worked on engine research and development, which subsequently saw him charge of the diesel engine project for the firm in 1976. In 1981, he was in overall charge of the engine department, and oversaw the performance of the engine in F1 in 1984 and 1985. When Renault quit F1, he moved to Ferrari and worked there for 2 years, before returning to Renault and their customer engines. He was a hugely pivotal figure in the huge success that Williams and Benetton enjoyed in the early 1990's. He stayed with Renault, in different technical guises until 2003, before joining Maserati and also becoming the head of Ferrari's powertrain department, where he remained for many years.
