No relation to Dan, but is son of Gene and father of Chuck Jr, all of whom have extensive midget careers. Chuck was the most successful of the three, and retired only recently. Gurney started racing at the age of 5 in a quarter-midget with Gene's help, but his parents divorced and Chuck moved to New Mexico, where he became a crew member of a sprint car team. But it was midgets in which he excelled, particularly on the West Coast. Retired in the late 1990's to help his son and was inducted in the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame in 2004.
