Builder of the Cicada Indy Car, he was a joint boss of Phoenix based Yaw Performance, an engineering advisor/supplier, worked as an advisor and representative of Ecoscapes, a landscape development and ecosystem concern. He was still working at the Baja California Sur base in Loreto, Mexico, when he died. Also a businessman, he raced in Europe, before retiring in 1990. Murphy ran his cars for him, Jerry Karl and Bob Harkey. Dan also worked as a diplomat for a while and also had a base in San Diego. Murphy's best result at USAC level was 7th at the Michigan International Speedway in his Cicada in September 1974.
