Until his death, John was very much still involved in motorsport, as he still raced in historic events, and visited them frequently. He was, until the late 2000's, an engineer in US single-seaters. John was also a driver coach and spotter for the Super Aguri Fernandez Racing IRL team. His son, of the same name, worked alongside John with the team, as a mechanic, but was tragically killed in 2004. Martin's best discipline was sports car road racing, and he converted his own car to become SCCA National Champion in 1964. Martin, who was based either in Wisconsin or Illinois, also raced in Trans Am and Formula 5000. He worked as his own chief mechanic and was also the entrant to his car, a hark back to earlier days. An accomplished engine builder, he latterly spent time building engines for restoration projects.
