In his younger days, Hiss also did water-skiing, as well as gliding and motorcycling. Started racing in 1965 and enjoyed a varied career, including Formula 5000, sportscars, Formula A and Formula B, as well as USAC events. Was married briefly to Arlene, who also raced and made one Indycar start herself; his second marriage, to Connie, lasted 42 years. Sadly Mike died just before Christmas 2018 after complications of a reoccurence of the original lymphona he fought so valiantly against. Mike also worked with Detroit Diesel Allison and was also a qualified pilot, flying both Cessna and Learjet planes.
