Oliver is of American and Swedish parentage. He began racing in the recent time-honoured fashion of karting, Formula Ford, US Formula 2000, Pro Mazda and then finally, Indy Lights. He won the 2017 US Formula 2000 title and then the 2019 Indy Lights championship to earn his place in Indycar in 2020, where he remained in 2021. In 2022, he moved to Formula E. Askew has had brief racing spells in England and China, the latter in the Formula Masters China series.
