Starting in karts aged just four years old, Robert, who grew up in St. Petersburg, Russia, moved to Italian and ADAC Formula 4 when he moved into car racing. But his career really progressed in 2018, when he won the FIA Formula 3 title (and the associated rookie title) as well as the Toyota Racing Series. From 2019 to 2021, he was in Formula 2, winning six times in two years and finishing a close runner-up in the series in 2021. Having enjoyed Formula 1 testing experience with Ferrari, Haas and Sauber, but not progressing further, his single-seater career looked to have stalled after moving to the GT World Challenge and the World Endurance Championship, but he moved to Indycar in 2025 to reignite his open-wheel career, and remained there in 2026 after an encouraging debut season. After the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Shwartzmann changed his racing licence to his country of birth so he could continue racing.
