After working at BAR as a designer, he joined Jaguar as their chief engineer. Retired in 2004, to return to Australia, where he has set up a rural venture with his family and now designs cars for fun. In more recent years, Oastler has returned to the sport; one is via his background of designing, whereas the other is totally different. Malcolm has built a racing motorcycle but is also now a racing driver himself and has become a very successful hillclimber. He won the 2014 and 2015 CAMS Australian Hillclimb Championship and the 2015 CAMS New South Wales Hillclimb Championship. He then won again in 2016, 2018 and 2019, the last two in a car he constructed himself.
