Was a very good sportscar driver, winning at Le Mans in 1952, but also enjoyed success in German Formula 2. Riess took up racing after World War 2 and was quickly on the pace racing either AFM's or in a Veritas. He was the 1950 German 2000cc Sportscar Champion and his local prowess earnt him an entry to appear in the German Grand Prix, where he impressed, finishing seventh, being the highest placed German finisher. Continued racing, again largely in sportscars, until 1957. Died after a period of ill-health. An industrialist who started racing aged 27, he also competed in hillclimbs before retiring due to personal reasons.
