3-litre Formula 1 World Championship events 1966-1985

These 1966 to 1985 results were initially compiled by Allen Brown, but these were in the very basic form required to track individual car histories. Since then further details, such as laps completed, qualifying times and so on, have been added from Rob Ryder's extensive database.

All comments, clarifications, corrections and additions are most welcome. Please email Allen at allen@oldracingcars.com if you can help with our research.

Individual sources for this event

Autosport 11 Mar 1971 pp10-19 (by David Phipps). Motoring News 11 Mar 1971 pp8-10 (by 'ARM' Andrew Marriott). Motor Sport April 1971 pp330,332-333 (by 'ARM' Andrew Marriott). Autocourse 1971-72 pp56-63 (published by Simon Taylor, edited by David Phipps, with F1 reports by Phipps and other articles by 'Elizabeth Haywood', the nom de plume of Priscilla Phipps, David's wife, and intricate lap charts by Alan Phillips). The Motor Racing Year No 3 (by Anthony Pritchard) pp34-40. Motoring News gave chassis numbers on the grid, to show which cars had started the race, and in the Practice Times table, which showed how T cars had been used. Pritchard's Motor Racing Year detailed all the cars present, including unused spares. Autocourse also became an important source in 1971, as its 'Entries and Practice Times' table showed exactly how T cars were used.

The ten "works" teams provided 22 entries: two cars from Lotus, Tyrrell, McLaren and Brabham; three from Ferrari, March, BRM and Surtees; and just one from Matra and Williams. The third cars from STP-March, Yardley-BRM and Surtees were numbered away from their main pairings, suggesting a 'B' team. The privateers were Jo Bonnier, with the McLaren M7C, and Team Gunston who had cars for Love and Pretorious, to bring the total to 25 entries. The only spare cars visible were an older Matra MS120 as a spare for Amon, and a BRM P153 for Rodriguez, but Motoring News noted that the Tyrrell team had a March 701 on a trailer as well. Regazzoni wrecked the new Ferrari 312B2 in pre-race testing, so a 312B was flown out for the race. Other new cars included the McLaren M19A in which Hulme was unlucky not to win the race, three March 711s, a Matra MS120B, a single BRM P160, and the Tyrrell 002.
