3-litre Formula 1 World Championship events 1966-1985

These 1966 to 1985 results were initially compiled by Allen Brown, but these were in the very basic form required to track individual car histories. Since then further details, such as laps completed, qualifying times and so on, have been added from Rob Ryder's extensive database.

All comments, clarifications, corrections and additions are most welcome. Please email Allen at allen@oldracingcars.com if you can help with our research.

Two entries were received from Lotus, Tyrrell, Shadow, Williams, three from McLaren, Brabham, BRM and Surtees; only one from Ferrari, and one again from March, Tecno and Ensign, a total of 24. The only non-arrival was the second Ferrari for Merzario. McLaren's third car was for the very highly-regarded Jody Scheckter, and the third Surtees was for Jochen Mass, who had been going well in Surtees' F2 team. The third works Brabham entry for De Adamich had been upgraded to a BT42 for this race. The privateers were Embassy Racing with Hill's Shadow, Space Racing with the stockbroker March 731, Lec with a March 731, Hesketh with yet another March 731, and the ex-De Adamich Brabham BT37 which had been sold to Hexagon of Highgate but entered by Brabham for John Watson, bringing the total to 29. The six spare cars were two Lotus 72Ds, the second Ferrari 312B3 which remained unused, Tyrrell 005, a spare Brabham BT42 for Reuteman, and the new Tecno-Goral E731, seen on track for the first time. There were 35 cars present, a new record for the 3-litre Formula One.

Before an agreement had been reached with the F1 Association, the only entries by the end of May were four non-association teams: Shadow, Embassy Racing and Hesketh Racing. A week later, Ensign had joined the list, but then Shadow pulled out, Alan Rees saying that as an associate member of the F1 Association, their entry was dependent on agreement being reached. This sharpened the negotiations and the organisers soon decided to give the F1 Association what they wanted. FOCA's grip on F1 was tightening.
