3-litre Formula 1 World Championship events 1966-1985

These 1966 to 1985 results were initially compiled by Allen Brown, but these were in the very basic form required to track individual car histories. Since then further details, such as laps completed, qualifying times and so on, have been added from Rob Ryder's extensive database.

All comments, clarifications, corrections and additions are most welcome. Please email Allen at allen@oldracingcars.com if you can help with our research.

Individual sources for this event

Autosport 8 Mar 1973 pp10-19 (by Pete Lyons). Motoring News 8 Mar 1973 pp10-14 (by 'ARM' Andrew Marriott). Motor Sport April 1973 pp368-371 and 'New cars at Kyalami' pp356 (by 'ARM' Andrew Marriott). Marriott's 'New cars at Kyalami' focused on the new McLaren M23 and Shadow DN1 designs.

The entry expanded significantly. There were two entries from Lotus, Tyrrell, Ferrari, Brabham, Williams and newcomer Shadow; three from McLaren and BRM; four from Surtees; and one from March. The privateers were the stockbroker March and two local drivers, making a total of 26 entries. Shadow became the 20th 3-litre F1 constructor, and the new McLaren M23 was also present, the new chisel-nosed cars starting to takeover from the bluff-nosed cars such as the Tyrrell, BRM and Surtees. Surtees described De Adamich's entry as a subsidiary team and although John Surtees was entered, he did not drive his car during official practice and it was effectively a spare for Hailwood. It was the only spare car present.
