3-litre Formula 1 World Championship events 1966-1985

These 1966 to 1985 results were initially compiled by Allen Brown, but these were in the very basic form required to track individual car histories. Since then further details, such as laps completed, qualifying times and so on, have been added from Rob Ryder's extensive database.

All comments, clarifications, corrections and additions are most welcome. Please email Allen at allen@oldracingcars.com if you can help with our research.

The field was largely as at Mosport Park, with two entries from each of Lotus and Williams; three from each of Tyrrell, McLaren, Brabham, Shadow, BRM and Surtees; and one from each of Ferrari. March and Ensign. The three privateers were Embassy Racing with Hill's Shadow, Space Racing with the stockbroker March 731, and Hesketh Racing with their March 731 for Hunt, bringing the total to 28. As well as Amon in the spare Tyrrell and Scheckter in the spare McLaren, the Watkins Glen field also included Mass in a third Surtees and Redman in a third Shadow. The only remaining spare car was Peterson's Lotus 72D, which had been stripped, the monocoque flown back to Hethel for repairs, returned and rebuilt, all before practice began at Watkins Glen. Cevert's car had also been rebuilt using a new monocoque flown out from Ripley and effectively a new car built up. After Cevert's fatal accident in practice in this car, the Tyrrell team withdrew, leaving 25 starters.
