Full name Albert, he was best known for his success in sprint cars. Smith made a number of appearances in USAC events, all but two of them on ovals, and all but one of them on a paved oval. His best result ended up being his first USAC Indy Car event, finishing fifth at Atlanta in his Watson FE-Offy. Al briefly appeared in ARCA Stock Cars, but it was sprint cars that he raced in longest, and was in USAC events in the discipline from 1961 until 1970.
