Died after a huge crash in a practice session for the 1973 Indy 500. He was a mechanic and car dealer at the time of his death. Pollard raced a wide variety of both cars and other machinery; this included hydroplanes, micro midgets and super modified stock cars. He won numerous super modified races, but also did a lot of charity work and public speaking; he did talks at churches and made special efforts to visit children with mental health issues and illnesses, spending a lot of time with them. At the LaRue Carter Memorial Hospital, the children's playground is still named in his honour for the time and work he spent with them. Two of Pollard's family also raced; son Mike and cousin Brad competed in various types of racing. Although born in Utah, Art grew up in Los Angeles and then in Oregon.
