A versatile racer, mainly in California, he died, after a long fight against cancer, at the family home in Fresno. Copp won the Bay Cities Racing Association Indoor Racing title three times; 1959, 1961 and 1964, beating the likes of Dick Atkins and Johnny Baldwin. An excellent midget car racer, Copp also raced sprint cars, stock cars and briefly, Indycars. He overcame a leg injury during his early days racing in the sport racing modified stock cars before having that success in the BCA Series. For three years in a row from 1962, Copp finished third in the National Midget series. A serious crash in 1965 left him with burns and facial scarring. Although he carried on racing for a bit, the crash in 1965 directly contributed to ill health and his subsequent death.
