Dirt-track specialist with a number of wins in the category, also winning the 1962 CRA Point sprint car title. Also adept at midget and sprint cars. Born in Illinois, his family moved to California whilst Colby was a boy, and he remained based in the state for the rest of his life. Colby started racing in 1946 in jalopies, moving into hot rods and sprint cars, where he soon achieved a number of wins. Colby retired from racing initially in 1964 to run a deer hunting preserve and ranch, before returning to racing in 1968, carrying on until 1972. He later served as the Californian Racing Association's official starter in 1975 and 1976, before running his ranch full-time.
