Midget legend, 1949 and 1950 AMORC Champion. Died of his injuries, after a long period in a coma, after a crash at Gardena raceway in January 1953. A cultured man, who had a great passion for classical music, Ball started his career in roadsters before going into the discipline in which he excelled. After his death, Phoenix's Indycar race was named in his honour, with a magnificent trophy also in his name, and this tribute continued right up to 1984. Ball was a farmer of cotton and alfalfa in the Phoenix area and loved hot rods, building a number of roadsters and a '40 Ford ragtop. He also won the Western States Roadster racing championship in 1950, and during the same year, he raced at South Mountain Speedway, which had an 18 race midget racing season; Bobby won 14 of them and placed 2nd in the remaining four.
