Garage owner whose only main race was his failed attempt to qualify for the Indianapolis 500. Born in present-day Bosnia and Herzegovina, Smith was a citizen of the Austrian-Hungarian empire as it was then, sailing from Fiume, which is now present day Rijeka, in Croatia. An automobile maintenance manager and business owner, Carl (occasionally written as Karl), once built a racing car standing just 25 inches from the ground, which at the time was the smallest automobile of its type in America. A car builder from 1914 onwards, he was a dirt-track racer for a while but also did stunt driving at Coney Island.
