Frequent competitor in AAA events, mostly dirt ovals, between the mid 1920's to the late 1930's. Wingerter was, like so many of his era, not only a racer but a car builder, entering his own Wingerter Special, or Specials to be more precise as he adapted a number of the Duesenberg cars. George's strongest AAA race was at Langhorne in 1935. He qualified sixth and he was running well until a connecting push rod bearing broke. Other than that, he was hard trying but often failed to qualify, making Indianapolis just the once, qualifying in 32nd place in 1931, but becoming the first retirement after 29 laps. Wingerter carried on working well into his mid-80's as an engineer.
