Killed in a race meeting at Phoenix. A quet, shy man, he was brilliant in hot rods and roadsters in California. He also acted as his own chief mechanic. Jack was the first man to qualify for Indianapolis with an average lap over 140mph. McGrath bought a car - a Ford Model T - when he was just thirteen, helped by the family meat packing money. He raced hot rods as a teenager and set up his own preparation business as a twenty-three year old in 1942, essentially for his friends and competitors in dry lake speed events. A dirt track specialist, Jack also won the 1946 Californian Roadster Association Championship.
