Died of cancer, and this fight against the disease brought an early end to his career. Indy stalwart, who mainly raced in sprint cars and sometimes built his own cars. His father was sixty-five years of age when Jimmy was born and died in 1932, when Jimmy was only seven years of age. Daywalt served in the Army Air Force in World War Two as a turret gunner and was based in England for much of the War, fighting over Europe in France and Belgium. He took racing up after the war, becoming a regular in the US Midwest in the Central States Racing Association races. He finished sixth in the Indianapolis 500 of 1953, earning the Rookie of the Year title.
