Retired from racing early to become a car salesman and to work in real estate and to also be a Studebaker garage owner. Called up to fight in World War One, Joe then remained in the armed forces all his life, commissioned as a first lieutenant during the war, and later rose up the ranks to be a Captain, and was still involved in the US Army at his death. Matson was, at the end of the first decade of the 20th century, one of the best drivers, despite only being part-time whilst he juggled his real estate demands and business interests in the oil industry. His most notable win was probably the 1909 Indiana Trophy held at the Crown Point raceway.
