Newcomer to Formula 1 in 2021 with Haas. His father, Dmitry, is a businessman, who is head of the Uralchem Integrated Chemicals firm. Nikita, who is of Belarussian descent, initially worked through the normal feeder lower formulae series before coming to some attention in European Formula 3 with a promising year in 2017 and then did very well in 2018 in GP3, scoring wins ahead of the more highly rated Anthoine Hubert and Callum Illot. Formula 2 saw a repeat of Formula 3's performances; a largely moribund first year was followed with a very strong second year. Despite a year of struggle, Mazepin initially remained at Haas for 2022. However Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Dmitry's links to the Putin regime and sanctions restricting Uralchem's cash flow led to Mazepin losing his seat. He subsequently announced that he was to set up a foundation for sportsmen and women who were unable to compete internationally due to political reasons and would concentrate on that, but on the same day was personally hit by sanctions, which affected his future plans. In 2023, he announced a return to racing in the Asian Le Mans Series.
