W. W. stood for William Wayne. Brown was an engine builder, who later worked on a racing technical committee and owned a machine works in Kansas. Brown was also a car builder, who built his own racing cars. Brown was both an accomplished road racer and a speed trial expert, and in the latter, took many speed records in 1915. He also competed in hillclimbs. Brown, in 1919, completely revamped his Richards Special (it was named Richards after Brown's backer, C. L. Richards, a millionaire from Kansas), where he changed a Hudson stock car engine and placed two valves whee the engine formerly had one, and steel cylinders instead of cast iron cylinders. However, the car lasted just 14 laps before Brown had to retire.
