Killed in a board track crash. English born, but a US citizen. A charismatic, top-line driver, Hughes moved to the US in October 1907, just a few weeks after his first wife, Minnie, died. Also worked in a garage. Hughes took many wins and speed records until his death. Hughes proved very adept in light cars in his early career but was at his peak around 1911 and 1912 as he won the Kane County Trophy at Elgin Speedway in 1911 and also won the Fairmont Park race at Philadelphia that year, before winning the Aurora Trophy in 1912, again at Elgin. He was born Alfred Edward Hughes, son of an auctioneer of the same name who died when Hughes was young. He worked with cars in both England and the US, being described in census and marriage records as a 'motor expert'. He lived around Chelsea and Fulham until he moved to America, with his young daughter by his first marriage remaining in the UK.
