Full name Wallace. Also worked as a mechanic, a former Chalmers employee, who later worked for Stutz. Also fought with the US Navy in World War 1. Butler initially got into racing by being a riding mechanic from 1921 onwards. He supported Cornelius Van Ranst, Ira Vail and Jules Ellingboe, including twice at the Indianapolis 500 (1921 and 1922), before racing himself. An occasional board oval racer during the mid 1920's, Butler failed to qualify a Model T Ford racing car in 1924 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
