Brother of Bobby and Al, and the father of Johnny, Jerry was the first Unser to appear in the 500. He was killed in a practice crash at Indianapolis, dying of his burns and complications of pneumonia over two weeks later. As a teenager, he was an accomplished wrestler but soon progressed into racing after driving a model A Ford that his father bought for him and his siblings. He was a winner in stock cars and was equally good at both short-track racing and hillclimbs, winning twice in his class (stock cars) at Pikes Peak. Jerry also spent two years serving in the US Navy before moving to New Mexico to work at his father's garage and workshop.
