Raced on until the early 1970's. Died of a heart-attack. Extremely varied racer who raced for over 15 years in sprint, stock, midget and Champ cars. Bud, whose real name was Melvin, was the son of a Norwegian father, thence his slightly unusual surname. His father worked as an engineer for a garage and this got Bud into cars and then racing, which he started in 1953 when he raced midgets. Bud enjoyed a long career in Indycar races, but only ever won the one race; triumphing in a dirt-track race at DuQuoin in 1966.
