Abel has enjoyed a relatively rapid rise to Indycar in 2025, having started racing in 2017 in his father, Bill Abel's, team. Abel Sr. raced in motorcross but he also owned Castle Point Motor Sports Track in New Castle, Kentucky, as well as running a construction business, before founding a team to help Jacob's career. Jacob raced in the Formula 3 Americas Championship, then Indy Pro 2000 in 2019 and from 2022 until 2024, Indy Lights, coming 2nd in the series in 2024. He has also raced sportscars and in Stadium Supertrucks. Abel has moved more to sportscars recently, competing in the Asian Le Mans Series in 2026.
