Jim was a primarily an automobile dealer, who was killed in a qualifying shunt for the CART race at Milwaukee, becoming the first fatality in a CART-sanctioned event, just a few months after he became the Indianapolis 500 Rookie of The Year after finishing seventh in the race. Hickman - as well as running his massive Datsun dealership in Chamblee, Georgia - also owned a ranch. Hickman was also formerly a fighter pilot for the United States Navy. Prior to 1982, Jim raced in the US Formula Ford series for a couple of years.
