The first Native American at the Indy 500, Boling was also the first non-100% Caucasian driver at the event, being a son of mixed parentage. Worked as an oil producer and as a automobile mechanic. Suffered an eye injury in a race in 1917, but despite this he carried on racing until the mid '20's. He was injured again in 1943, when on his way back from work, he was badly injured when a drunk driver crashed into him. This brought a landmark case against his employer, which he won, but suffered ill-health afterwards, from which he died of in 1962.
