Top driver killed in an AAA Championship race at Del Mar dirt track, when it is believed something broke on his car, pitching his car into a series of flips and Mays onto the track. He died shortly afterwards in hospital. A true midget and sprint car legend, he was one of America's greatest - he won the National AAA title in 1940 and 1941. A respected man amongst his peers, Rex also served in World War Two as an Army Air Force pilot. It was a pilot that Rex had a rather naughty party trick - whenever a newcomer flew in Rex's plane, he would shut the engine off and say 'oh no', before turning the engine back on once he'd seen his passenger's face!
