Killed in a dirt track crash, when he collided with Chick Barbo, who also died in the crash. Mainly in midgets and big cars, Mattson was also based in California, Wilmington, Delaware, and in both Auburn and Carney's Point in New Jersey. Mattson began midget racing in 1937, basing his racing in Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey. By day though, Mattson work was as a civil service worker in the shipbuilding industry and in 1941, when the attack of Pearl Harbour occurred, Mattson was sent to California to be based there, where he met his wife. At the time of his death, Mattson was a top AAA Midwest and AAA Eastern competitor.
