13 F1 cars appeared: two entries from each of Lotus, Surtees, Shadow and McLaren, three from BRM; and one each from Tyrrell and Williams. The Williams FX3s were having their last race before the deformable structures regulation came in. Stewart had a spare car, and Lotus needed to press a third Lotus 72 into service after 72/5 was shunted in pre-race testing. Stewart's new car was numbered 006/2, not 007, as that number was being withheld for something "really new". Schuppan and Regazzoni had BRM P160Es with 1973 regulation deformable structures and Lauda had a normal model. Revson had a brand new McLaren M23 and Hailwood a brand new Surtees TS14A with lighter monocoque. Just after the race, Surtees announced that Andrea de Adamich would not be continuing with the team.
