Died in a plane crash in Pennsylvania, when his plane broke up in mid-air, crashing into a hillside below. The crash also killed his passenger and friend, Carl Mueller Jr. Mainly an open wheel racer, but he also raced in NASCAR. A small chap, he was a committed and hard trying driver, and a true legend in SCCA racing. Of Silician and Mexican ancestry. Al was a businessman in the car warranty ndustry who was also a five-time national hillclimb champion in the 1960's before moving into Indycar racing. He fought in the Vietnam War and was part of the US National Guard for a while and he was also involved in many commercial and community projects in Easton, Pennsylvania, where he lived most of his life.
