Bernard retired from his full-time racing career in 1995, but after many years away, returned in 2011 to race in the V de V endurance series and still makes a rare appearance for the odd endurance event. Now works as a manager in a Geneva garage. Santal, who has dual nationality - French as well as Swiss - was particularly adept in sportscars, taking class wins at Le Mans in 1993 and 1995, but Bernard also was a race winner in French Formula 3 at a time when the opposition was strong. Also raced in touring cars after his brief spell in Formula 3000. Santal, who a cheesemaker originally by profession, was very capable in single-seaters, winning in Formula 3 and holding his own against the likes of Emanuele Pirro and Philippe Alliot.
