Killed in a practice crash when he lost control of his car and went over the rail by the side of the track, dying on his way to hospital. At the time of his death, Ansterburg held the World record for the fastest lap on a mile-and-a-quarter board track. Ernie was also well known as a riding mechanic, especially for Joe Boyer, supporting him in 1919 and 1920 and then with Roscoe Sarles. The pair came second in the 1921 Indianapolis 500 and won the board track oval race at Cotati that year. After supporting Sarles again in 1922, Ernie started racing before his short career came to a tragic end.
