Knight suffered tragedy in 1910 when his father died in a fire, but his was a tough existence as the family were poor. Aged only 13, Knight worked as both a bellboy at the Columbia Club in Indianapolis, and then worked as a garage mechanic. He impressed one of the Columbia Club's regulars, Colonel Russell B. Harrison, who was the son of former United States President, Benjamin Harrison. Harrison employed Knight, still only 14 years of age at the time, as his chauffeur. Despite police misgivings, Harrison's standing helped Knight learn a lot about driving and he took up the sport a few years later.
