1919 winner (although he also won the 1923 event as he was a relief driver for Tommy Milton) and one of the USA's first racing stars. He had a long and successful career and his Indianapolis win in 1919 led to a band playing 'Back Home in Indiana' as a tribute, a tradition which still lasts to this day. Killed in the Altoona 200 mile race. Wilcox started racing for the National Motor Company and took his first win in 1909 in New Orleans. Unusually for both the time and generally, Wilcox moved from the States to Cuba to race in 1919, but it was only a brief diversion from a generally successful career in his homeland.
