Died after a long battle with cancer. Until then, he worked as a motor racing analyst for the ESPN TV coverage of the sport and as an insurance agent in Brownsburg. Drove for many years in USAC events. Rice was a two time USAC Silver Crown Champion (1977, 1981) and a USAC Midget Car Champion (1973) who also became the co-rookie of the year at the 1978 Indianapolis 500. Rice, who began racing in 1968, carried on racing until 1992, winning over 20 main events. When he died, Larry was the President of the Indianapolis 500 Oldtimers Club. Larry also had a degree in marketing and worked as a college tutor in his early working years. During racing, Rice became notable for wearing a range of hats or headwear during his career, often never the same hat twice in a year!
