Killed in a car crash, when returning from a family outing with his son. That son, Mike Jr., became a racing driver himself in years to come. Mike was a popular veteran of USAC/CART with 5 wins to his credit, but started in midget racing as a fourteen-year-old in 1961, before establishing himself as a winner in sprint cars. Particularly good on ovals he never did win at the Indianapolis 500, the closest he came being third in 1979. Although born in Oklahoma, Mike grew up in California from an early age.
