After retiring from driving in the 1980's, Dave kept his links with the sport by visiting historic events and hill-climbs in South Africa and even visited his country of birth for a few events. Sadly died in 2013. Charlton was six time South African Formula 1 champion, but also took a win in the very last race he competed in; winning a charity race at Zwartkops in 1990. After moving to South Africa as a boy just after World War Two, Charlton took up racing in the mid-1950's. As well as great success in South African Formula 1, Charlton was also a constant winner in sportscar events in his homeland. He was also an accomplished pilot.
